Learning Resources LER2935 Botley The Coding Robot Activity Set: Screen-free coding for kids
Say hello to Botley, your kid's new best friend in the world of coding! Part of the Learning Resources crew, Botley is here to turn coding into child's play—literally. Designed for tiny techies as young as 5, this little robot is all about making coding as easy as pie. And guess what? No screens needed here. (Yep, you heard that right—no phone or tablet required. Just good old-fashioned hands-on fun.) Plus, he's ready to roll straight out of the box—just pop in 5 AAA batteries (not included, sorry!), and you're good to go.
But Botley's not just a one-trick pony. This clever bot can handle up to 80 steps right off the bat, with a sneaky 40 more hidden steps waiting to be unlocked. He's got moves like following loops, dodging obstacles with if/then smarts, and even a cool black-line follow mode for those DIY paths. The 77-piece set? It's packed with everything from coding cards to detachable arms (because why not?), plus obstacles and games to keep the fun going. And by fun, we mean learning—shh, don't tell the kids.
Here's the kicker: while kids are busy having a blast with Botley, they're secretly building problem-solving and critical thinking skills. It's like sneaking veggies into their favorite meal. Parents and teachers are all over this, because Botley proves that STEM education doesn't have to be all screens and seriousness. It's playtime with a purpose, opening up the world of coding in a way that's actually fun. Who knew learning could be this cool?

i bought this for my nephew, thinking it would be a great way to introduce him to coding in a fun, hands-on way. as a brand loyalist to learning resources, i had high hopes, but it's just okay. it does what it says—no screens, easy to use, and the kid enjoys moving it around and setting up paths. the obstacle avoidance and following lines work well, and the set has plenty of parts to keep things interesting for a while. however, i'm neutral on it because after a short time, the novelty wears off, and the need for extra batteries is annoying. it's good for learning basics, but don't expect it to be a long-term toy. from what i feel, it's a decent start, but could use some improvements to make it more engaging over time.
- Pros: from what i feel, this thing is a beast for getting kids into coding without any screens, which is fairly awesome. it comes with a lot of pieces and is ready to use right away, making it easy to set up and start playing. the way it can handle many steps and avoid obstacles is pretty cool, and it secretly teaches problem-solving skills, which i appreciate.
- Cons: disappointed that it needs batteries that aren't included, which is a hassle. also, the initial steps are good, but unlocking more feels a bit limited, and it might not hold interest for too long without more variety. from what i feel, it could be better in terms of durability or having more built-in features.
