LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. (WKRN) – A Lawrenceburg middle school student has successfully raised the money she needed to participate in a Duke University online class.
Taylor Borden, a straight-A student who did well enough on the ACT as a middle schooler, was invited to attend an online computer science class.
She needed a laptop computer, which she didn’t own and her family could not afford.
Borden opened a GoFundMe page, hoping to raise $500 to purchase a laptop from Walmart.
After just four days, contributions totaling $1,870 had rolled in providing her with enough money for the laptop and tuition for the class.
“Honestly, I only expected to raise $100 to $200 at the most,” she said in a recorded message on her GoFundMe page. “But you guys have been awesome. News 2 came to my school today [Tuesday] and interviewed me.”
Borden said after her story ran Tuesday on News 2 at 4 p.m., she was blown away with how fast the donations came in.
“I was at Nolensville practice this afternoon,” she said in the video message. “We were just answering those science questions. One of my teachers had their phone out and we were just watching those numbers go up. You guys are so amazing.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, the total amount of contributions sat at $1,870 from 24 contributors.
