New reports claim that Xiaomi is developing its first laptop running on the Linux operating system and will be released in the second quarter of 2016.

After making a big impact with its affordable range of powerful smartphones, Xiaomi, aka China’s Apple, is now reportedly entering the laptop market. According to Bloomberg, Xiaomi is in talks with Samsung for the supply of memory chips, which will be used to power its first laptop expected to be launched in early 2016.

“Xiaomi Corp. is considering the introduction of its first laptop early next year, people with direct knowledge of the matter said, opening a new front in its battle against Apple, Inc. and Lenovo Group, Ltd.,” according to Bloomberg.

Xiaomi’s new laptop will be positioned somewhere between Apple’s MacBook Air and Lenovo’s ThinkPad, and could specifically compete against these laptops in the Chinese market. Xiaomi is already proving to be a tough competitor to Apple in China in the smartphone space, and the fight could now spill over to the laptop market. Moreover, the smartphone market is becoming increasingly competitive, particularly in China, where sales declined by 4% in the second quarter of this year over the same period last year.

Samsung will supply the memory chips and display for Xiaomi’s new laptop, which is expected to be super slim and ultra light. Xiaomi will also follow its usual strategy of offering its upcoming laptop at extremely competitive prices without compromising on its quality. The company will reportedly be partnering with manufacturers Foxconn and Inventec to build the new laptops.

There are rumors that Xiaomi could offer its new laptop with a 15-inch screen running on the Linux operating system. Laptops with 15-inch displays are particularly popular in China and Xiaomi hopes to price its new laptop competitively at about $470. It will be interesting to see if Xiaomi can replicate the success that it has witnessed in the smartphone market in the laptop space as well.
