Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) applauded a man who reportedly planted a story about the Senate minority leader being beaten up with conservative bloggers and radio hosts, saying that the success of the tall tale proves that “journalism doesn’t exist.”
“What this guy proved to me is that journalism doesn’t exist,” Reid said on Tuesday according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I wish I’d meet this guy and pat him on the back.”
Reid has been recovering from severe facial injuries after an accident while exercising in January. A man identified by the Las Vegas Sun as Larry Pfeifer reportedly planted a story about Reid actually being beaten up by his brother to see how far the tale would go. He told the story to John Hinderaker of the conservative Power Line blog, and it took off from there, eventually making it onto Rush Limbaugh’s show. (Huffington Post lays out how Pfeifer’s story made its way to Rush Limbaugh).
Reid said he doesn’t think Pfeifer should apologize since “it shows how foolish journalism is as we know it. It’s evaporating and that’s too bad.”
Reid added that he does not consider Limbaugh and others who circulated the story to be journalists.
“If they were journalists, they wouldn’t be playing around with this garbage,” he said.
