And on Monday his two-year tenure came to an end when rival Malcolm Turnbull won a snap vote for the Liberal Party leadership following a sudden coup.

Mr Abbott has been a divisive figure in Australian politics. He has rejected calls for a referendum on gay marriage and used the military to repel asylum-seekers from the country’s shores.

Aussies have since tweeted their delight at the news Mr Abbott had been given the boot en masse:

There was, however, one dissenting voice in the mix. Mr Abbott’s long-time ally Rupert Murdoch.
