Oscars politics started with blue ribbon fashion statement – The Mercury News
While watching stars parade down the Academy Awards red carpet, we’re accustomed to seeing actresses dripping diamonds off their ears or necks as their most notable fashion accessories.
But with tonight’s ceremony taking a political turn — with host Jimmy Kimmel already spiking jokes about President Donald Trump, and presenters and winners finding ways to express concern about his controversial policies — the most eye-catching fashion accessory turned out to be a simple blue ribbon that has potent political meaning.
It started with “Loving” actress Ruth Negga, who turned heads on the red carpet less for her vibrant red Valentino dress but more for the blue ribbon affixed above her heart.
The ribbon represents the American Civil Liberties Union’s new Stand with A.C.L.U. initiative, E news reported.
The organization most recently made headlines for its advocacy against the Trump administration’s order banning immigrants and refugees from seven Muslim-dominated countries
Joining Negga in her blue ribbon advocacy were Karlie Kloss, Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins and Sting.
The Hollywood Reporter said the initiative, which launched last week, encourages stars to wear the ribbons on the red carpet to show solidarity with the ACLU, “which has worked for nearly 100 years to defend and protect individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and law of the U.S.”
Negga’s stylist, Karla Welch, posted a photo of the actress on Instagram with this caption accompanying the photo of the ribbon: “The accessory I’m most proud of.”
