A relative of Venezuelan-American fashion designer Carolina Herrera has been found dead along with his business partner after the pair were abducted.
Reinaldo Herrera, the designer’s 34-year-old nephew, and Fabrizio Mendoza, 31, were at a restaurant Thursday night in Caracas, Venezuela, when a group took them hostage and attempted to ransom them, according to NBC Miami.
Even though the ransom was paid, authorities say the gang killed Herrera and Mendoza anyway. Their bodies were found in a truck on a highway outside the city.
Originally from Caracas, Carolina Herrera has been calling Manhattan’s Upper East Side her home for the last several years.
She was recently named the 2017 Designer of Excellence by the Chicago History Museum’s Costume Council, in part for the dresses she’s crafted for first ladies such as Jacqueline Onassis and Michelle Obama.
However, with the award presentation set for this Monday, it is unknown if the event will be postponed or canceled.
