WHAT to do when you’ve just presented a brilliant collection, and your public awaits you — at the end of a ridiculously long runway?

There are two obvious options:

1) Pop out briefly from backstage, wave, then hide, knowing your picture won’t make the papers (never mind — Gemma Ward’s will).

2) Suck it up and walk all the way down, trying not to notice when editors check their watches, worse still, get up and leave (time is money, plus it’s Sunday night and they want their dinner).

Last night, Kym Ellery found a third way: she galloped down her runway, which took up that entire bit of Sydney’s Carriageworks complex that’s normally home to Eveleigh Farmers’ Markets (and was once a blacksmith’s workshop). She looked as graceful as a thoroughbred, her bell-bottoms swinging, and a smile on her dial as impressive as her clothes.

Ah, the clothes. There’s a reason why Ellery is currently the only Australian designer to show on the Paris fashion week schedule. While other designers will present their Spring ’15 looks this week, Ellery showed AW ’15, which debuted in Paris in February. It’s impeccably cut, expensively made, original, beautiful — her coats in particular are, as we say in fashion, beyond. Our bets are on Kym.
