All About the Designer of Beyoncé’s Baby Announcement Look – Vanity Fair
Late on Thursday night, Beyoncé debuted her twins, Sir and Rumi Carter, via an Instagram post, just minutes before she and Jay-Z made their first public appearance since the babies’ birth less than a month ago. The new photo is just as aesthetically pleasing as her maternity shoot and features all of the same pastel colors as her pregnancy announcement in February. The new image also features a billowing pastel-colored dress designed by Alejandro Gómez Palomo, the 25-year-old designer behind genderless fashion brand Palomo Spain, who has been busy lately turning heads in the fashion world.
After graduating from the London School of Fashion, Palomo debuted a fresh idea for menswear at New York Fashion Week early in 2017. The collection largely focused on gender fluidity; W magazine called it the most exciting show of the week. His line included pleated skirts with metallic silk with a polka-dot pattern, sleeveless jumpsuits, and garters.
“I’m trying to bring couture back to the boys,” he said backstage at his show, per Women’s Wear Daily.
The fact that Beyoncé chose Palomo, whose entire brand focuses on gender nonconformity, for her photo shoot with her twins might say a lot about the message she could be trying to send here—a woman at the peak of her maternal power who still won’t necessarily play by the rules.
It’s unclear how Palomo’s work came to Beyoncé’s attention, but he is already a name on the fashion scene. This year, Palomo was also a short-list nominee for the L.V.M.H. Prize, which eventually went to designer Marine Serre. As an integral part of the Carter twins’ first public photo, Palomo has won another prize, or at least a place in Instagram history.
