Sen. Ben Sasse: There’s ‘Crappy Journalism’ Out There, But Trump Shouldn’t ‘Weaponize Distrust’ of the Press – Mediaite
Senator Ben Sasse told CNN’s Jake Tapper this morning that while he agrees with President Trump about there being “crappy journalism” out there, he’s wary of attempts to “weaponize distrust” of the press.
The President has tweeted a lot in the past week about the press, going after both CNN and MSNBC, and after this interview aired he tweeted a fan video of himself literally fighting back against CNN.
(So yes, keep in mind that everything Sasse said came before that new tweet.)
The Nebraska Republican said that there’s a difference between calling out “crappy coverage” and “trying to weaponize distrust.” He talked about the importance of all the freedoms granted in the First Amendment, including freedom of the press.
He said he even worries about “getting to a place where we don’t have shared public facts.”
Sasse made it clear again he agrees there’s “crappy journalism” out there that needs to be called out, but criticizing that should not lead to heightened political “tribalism” and echo chambers.
