Italian Police Raid ‘Islamist Terrorist Network’ Said to Be Planning Attack –

ROME — Italian authorities were conducting a nationwide police raid on an “Islamist terrorist network” affiliated to al Qaeda Friday morning, officials told NBC News.

At least 18 people have been arrested in seven different provinces as of 8 a.m. local time in Rome (2 a.m. ET), police officials said. The alleged terrorist cell was based in the island of Sardinia and was preparing an attack in Pakistan, police said.

Perpetrators of the terrorist attack at the market of Peshawar, Meena Bazar, in October 2009, which killed 100 people, are thought to be among those arrested.

This is a developing story.
