Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont, will announce his presidential candidacy shortly after Midnight on Thursday with a written statement, CBS News has confirmed.

The announcement will be emailed to supporters and posted on his website, BernieSanders.com. Later on Thursday, Sanders will hold a press conference at the U.S. Capitol to lay out his agenda.
Sanders will seek the Democratic presidential nomination, ensuring that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has at least one primary challenger. However, Sanders does not intend to change his party affiliation from Independent to Democrat. As a self-identified socialist, Sanders plans to run to the left of Clinton.
